About our handcrafted leather bags
Every Chiban bag and small leather good is cut and stitched by hand in our workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We work in full-grain Ethiopian highland cowhide and, for the softest pieces, Ethiopian sheepskin. Full-grain leather keeps the strongest layer of the hide, which is why it wears in rather than wearing out.
The collection moves from leather tote bags, crossbody bags and backpacks to work bags, weekenders and wallets. Each is made in a choice of finishes: smooth and pull-up, pebbled, or crocodile-embossed. Smooth leather develops a patina with use, while pebbled and embossed leathers keep their texture and age more quietly.
Chiban is a women-owned workshop and social enterprise that trains and employs former street youth, so each piece also carries the work of the people who made it.
