A leather weekender should be roomy, hard-wearing and good-looking enough to be carried through an airport and into a hotel. Ours have rolled leather handles, a spacious main compartment and a detachable shoulder strap, and are made by hand in Addis Ababa from full-grain Ethiopian cowhide.

Travel is where leather shows its age best. Scuffs and creases from the road become part of the bag, and a little conditioning keeps the hide supple. Pebbled finishes are more forgiving of rough handling, while smooth leather builds the deepest patina.
